Middle-age spread – it’s one of those things that you never knew could happen to you until it happens. How do I know this?
Because it happened to me.
From March 2016 to March 2017 I gained 10 pounds.
I used to be one of those women, you know the ones that eat whatever they want and never gain a pound.
I should probably also mention I’ve always been active – different activities for different life stages. For the past 10 years I have been a runner, OK really more of a jogger. I averaged 10k five times a week.
So adding 10 pounds was a bit of shock.
Did you know the average man and woman add 1-2 pounds around their middle every year from the ages of 35 to 55? And I gained 10 pounds in just one year?
Initially I put on three pounds and my husband told me not to worry, it’s muscle. Since I had just modified my workout routine by reducing my runs from five to three times a week and adding in Kayla Itsines Bikini Body Guide 1.0 it kind of made sense.
Unfortunately, by October 2016 my jeans were feeling a little tighter in both the waist and the legs. So, I jumped on the scale again only to discover I was up a total of six pounds! And by my 48th birthday I was exactly 10 pounds heavier than the year before. I had to admit ‘it’ was happening to me.
‘IT’ of course being middle-age spread.
Weight gain at middle age is usually a result of a combination of factors, including poor diet, lack of movement and changing hormones.
My current exercise level is more than enough to burn any visceral fat. While I hate to admit it, at 48 years old changing hormones and more likely poor diet was behind my weight gain. As we age our metabolism slows and we need fewer calories.
While I can’t control my hormones, I can control what I eat.
By reducing my calories (more on this later) I have nipped that nasty middle-age spread in the bud. I may have won this battle but I know the war will continue.
