Cane ReImagined

Based on my Instagram feed, cane furniture is definitely back in style and has been for some time. It can be found in chairs, sideboards, dressers as well as decor accents like planters, mirrors and even tissue box covers – and I like it!

I inherited a Mid-Century Wood and Cane Chair from my Grandmother years ago. As I moved around a lot my Dad agreed to keep it for me. It quickly became his favorite chair. Not only did he find it to be extremely comfortable, it was easy for him to get in and out of. This chair is where he sat to: read the morning paper, watch TV, chat with family and friends, and contemplate life. As he recently passed, the chair is now back with me. While I am thrilled my Dad got so much mileage out of the chair it does unfortunately mean it has seen better days. As it has sentimental value, I’ve been looking for ideas on how to give it new life.

Below are some of the images featuring cane furniture that is flooding my feed and caught my eye.

I love how furniture designers have updated cane furniture through the use of curves and natural cane. I am especially drawn to pieces that use a mix of light and dark materials giving pieces a moodier feel. I’m not opposed to the bleached wood and natural cane – it definitely could bring a bright, effortlessly chic and beachy vibe into our home. But, I don’t believe my chair lends itself to that look.

My chair is very traditional. Since our taste in furniture leans more towards modern, I’m thinking of painting my chair black and replacing the dark cain with light cane. I’ll also need to replace the seat cushion and back but I’m having a difficult time making a decision on the upholstery.

Picking upholstery is never an easy task. There is always a lot to consider – pattern or solid? Bold color or neutral? Fabric or leather? In addition, it’s important to know how the item, in our case, the chair will be used and what room it be placed in. Both are difficult to answer when you aren’t in your forever home. For now, my plan is to stick with a luxurious crushed velvet fabric but pick a neutral color.

The chair in the below image is very similar to mine as well as my vision for giving my very old and well used chair new life!
